Abstract Greenhouse gas reduction is one of the main objectives of EU climate and energy policy. RES targets for energy sectors are highly important as these sectors in 2018 contributed to 35% of all CO2 emissions in the European Union. This paper aims by using publicly available statistics to determine whether an increase in the share of RES in energy consumption necessarily results in a reduction of the overall CO2 emissions and particularly from energy production sectors, as well as what aspects should be taken into account when comparing results from different countries. The results show that, overall, the increase of RES corresponds to reduction of GHG; however, when comparing individual countries normalization of statistical data regarding hydropower generation and net import/export balance of electricity is recommended.
