Abstract Unfortunately, preoccupation with the emission of CO2 and in this context with the role of nephrology and the extracorporeal treatment options such as dialysis in climate change has intensified, but only in the last few years. In the meantime, international societies and the EU Commission (European Green Deal) have put the topic on the agenda. This article provides an overview of these developments, describes the status quo in Germany and draws a line for potential adaptations of processes within nephrology to achieve the goals of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
