Abstract The main objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between innovation and sustainability based on the five stages model by Nidumolu, Prahalad and Rangaswami (2009). As a method for collecting data, we adopted a multiple case study, with semi-structured interviews, documentary research and technical visits in loco. The results showed that the four industries is or went through the five phases and develop or developed incremental innovations aligned with sustainable actions, based on the compliance of legislation or on the personal motivation of the managers, without any systemic institutional governmental direction for the building of business models based on sustainable innovation.
