Abstract Companies face the challenge of innovating in a competitive environment marked by constant and abrupt changes. Objective. To analyze the state of the art on innovation and business sustainability, with the aim of revealing their relationship and interpretable research patterns. Methodology. A systematic review of scientific articles found in the Scopus database between 2016 and 2021 was conducted, yielding 59 relevant papers. Results. According to the thematic analysis, the contributions are concentrated in five major lines of research, namely: business innovative capability; innovation for sustainable business models; sustainability-oriented innovation; tourism-oriented business innovation and sustainability; and innovation and sustainability in times of pandemic. Conclusions. Most of the articles address the first two research lines; they also consider sustainability from the social, environmental and economic perspectives. Additionally, it was discovered that studies in the tourism context are scarce.
