Abstract The article proves feasibility of principles of strategic management of institutions of higher education. These principles are designed to promote comprehensive development of universities, strengthening of economic security, domestic resource mobilization, formation of a positive image of schools. Strategic management process involves development of vision and mission of institutions, setting of objectives, analysis of the external and internal environment, analysis of strategic alternatives, strategy and its implementation. The paper proposes to use one of the common strategic management methodologies - balanced system by D. Norton and R. Kaplan which broadcasts university strategy in a fairly complete set of indicators that make up a system of strategic monitoring and control. The BSC-model is based on linking four perspectives of organization: relationship with customers, internal business processes, financial performance, as well as development and training. The article discusses in detail each of these perspectives in relation to activities of the university. Using strategic management enables strategic priorities for sustainable development of the university - the most important directions to ensure its economic security, to ensure the satisfaction of needs of individuals, society and the government in high-quality education.
