Abstract |
Sustainable transport systems create a positive impact to the environment, social and economic growth of cities and communities. Development of safe, modern and efficient transportation can contribute to sustainability of public transport. In 2010, the Philippines became part of the regional bloc that committed to establish a sustainable, energy efficient, and environmental-friendly transport system that is why the government has implemented E-Trike Project to promote energy efficiency and clean technologies in the transport sector in the country. The introduction of e-trikes is envisioned to pave way for increased safety standards and improved environmental compliance which complements government's plan to support e-vehicle business. However, the patronage of e-trike services of commuters deters its full implementation in the country. Hence, the paper aims to evaluate the sustainability of e-trike operation in the city of Manila using two quantitative measures such as Level of Service (LOS) scores and Quality of Service (QOS) scores. The LOS scores were used to measure the satisfaction level of passengers regarding e-trike operation in the city Manila while the QOS scores were used to determine the performance level of e-trike operation in the city. Indicators and variables for LOS and QOS were gathered from numerous review of literatures related to sustainability of public transport. The paper also intends to identify significant factors that contribute to the sustainability of e-trike operation based on statistical relationship of LOS and QOS scores. Finally, the authors plan to develop a sustainability model for e-trike operation based on the significant factors identified in the study that can be used for future researches regarding sustainability performance of public transport. Key findings from the study revealed that factors that contribute to the sustainability of e-trike operation are the following: (1) environmental factor: energy consumption, pollution emission, and noise pollution; (2) economical factor: fare affordability and operating ratio; and (3) social factor: service frequency, accessibility, ease of availability and headway regularity in peak hours. |
