Abstract Sustainable behavior is presented as a set of actions directed by a concern for the environment, society, and the search for economic benefits; For the generation of such behaviors in the business environment, a set of competencies at the individual level is presented with transcendental relevance. By virtue of the foregoing, the present study aimed to analyze entrepreneurial competencies and determine their influence towards the development of sustainable behavior in the MSMEs of Tamaulipas, an important Mexican state. To achieve this, three skills were evaluated: recognition of opportunity, innovation, and interpersonal competence. The research was carried out through a cross-sectional quantitative analysis, using a second order model supported by a method of structural equations based on partial least squares for hypothesis testing. As results, it was obtained that entrepreneurial competencies exert a positive and statistically significant influence on the generation of sustainable behavior, where the ability that makes the greatest contribution is the recognition of opportunities.
