Abstract A significant cost in using second-use EV batteries in stationary energy storage is power conversion and processing. By reducing this cost, the potential for a sustainable circular economy for EV batteries and battery energy storage systems (BESS) can be realized. The challenge with second-use batteries is the heterogeneity of their characteristics, which makes prevailing methods for power processing particularly intensive, and hence expensive. We present a lite-sparse hierarchical partial power processing (LS-HiPPP) strategy that overcomes these obstacles for batteries in parallel, which are needed in lower voltage applications that include energy buffering for EV fast charging and behind-the-meter energy storage.
