Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze the main management practices for sustainability and performance in companies the mining industry. We identified the conditions that favor the integration of sustainability in the business strategy from the model of Lacy et al. (2010) and the sustainability-oriented management practices based on the ten principles of sustainable growth in the mining industry defined by the International Council on Mining and Metals [ICMM] (2008). Business performance was evaluated based on performance indicators proposed by the Global Reporting Initiative [GRI] (2006, 2010b). The work was conducted by means of a survey with companies of the mineral sector associated to the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM). In general, the analyzed companies consider important the integration of sustainability into business strategy and adopt management practices for sustainability. However, it was observed that is still incipient use of indicators to measure the impact of the adoption these practices.
