Abstract Based on the case of the Spanish Independent Media Platform (PMI), this work delves into the difficulty of creating media alternatives that are entirely independent from media and financial power structures. Although there are attempts at counterpower within the dominant model, the inherent connections and imbalances present significant challenges. In the analysis of the economic structure of the media that make up the PMI, we will observe how most of them rely on traditional internal organizational structures both for the newsroom and for the business model; likewise, through the creation of a map of relationships among the different actors with which the PMI media are related, we identify connection nodes and edges that allow us to establish that the resulting network does not remain isolated from the hegemonic structure. Finally, the PMI media despite its limitations play a crucial role in fostering spaces of resistance and dialogue against hegemonic power structures but face financial and organizational obstacles to achieving sustainable resistance.
