Abstract Currently, in China, diversified models and policies associated with urban development have been put forward including the sustainable city, eco-city and low-carbon city models, and urban recycling economy. However, the pathway and measures of the most eco-friendly mode are currently not known. This research was conducted to predict the effects of different development alternatives on future energy consumption and carbon emission taking Guangzhou as a case study. An Extended Snapshot Tool (ExSS) model was built to analyze the future trends of energy demand and carbon emission from the base year 2005 to 2030 under two scenarios: business-as-usual (BAU) and low-carbon (CM). The results show that in the LC scenario the total carbon emissions in Guangzhou is expected to reach 170 million t-CO2 by 2030, 51% lower than the BAU scenarios. Overall, the results of this study provide insights into Guangzhou's low-carbon future and highlight possible steps to develop a sustainable low-carbon city.
