Abstract The paper presents the innovative idea of managing European ecotourism destinations using information and communication technologies. The sustainable development of tourist destinations has become a key concern for the European Commission during the last ten-fifteen years and several initiatives and projects were developed in this field. Such initiatives include also the creation of genuine sets of indicators for tourist destinations that can be used in order to evaluate the sustainability and quality performance of a specific destination or to benchmark it with other destinations. After synthesizing the work accomplished by the experts of the European Commission, the present paper analyzes the existing indicators from the QUALITEST and the European Tourist Indicators System for Sustainable Destinations in order to identify a set of relevant and suitable indicators on which a Business Intelligence planning tool can be built for managing ecotourism destinations. A decision support system (DSS) is preferred from the different existing Business Intelligence informatics tools. A simple set of existing indicators is preferred and a basic architecture of the decision support system is presented, the main parts of it including two databases, the indicators database, which is a collection of data, based on the selected indicators and a strategic database, which is a collection of potential models that can be used to forecast the possible decisions and strategies, but also an adequate interface. The paper also advances the possibility to add a geographic information system (GIS), transforming the initially proposed Business Intelligence tool into a spatial decision support system (SDSS), referred to in the academic literature as a true policy support system.
