Abstract This article aims to analyze the concepts of diversity from the perspective of administration and the transition from the proposition of affirmative action to the diversity management in the organizations. This is an exploratory research carried out through a systematic review of articles published in journals. Despite the diverse cultural context of society and companies, the theme is relatively recent on the agenda of Brazilian organizations. Diversity is no longer an option for companies, as it is now considered an important factor for the business model in several organizations. Living with and between differences, whether of gender, color, religion or classes, among others, is an element of impact on corporate results, generating a sustainable and responsible business. Starting from the elaboration of a theoretical reference on the management of diversity, it appears that the theme in Brazil and in the world is in constant transformation and that there are still few scientific publications on the theme, thus characterizing a fertile field for the development of studies and research. Based on the elaboration of a theoretical framework on the management of diversity, it appears that the theme in Brazil and in the world is constantly changing, being a fertile field for studies and publications.
