Abstract This article introduces a methodology for the definition of rural development projects through industrial design and technological innovation. Our approach starts from the role of the rural community, the values and interests prevailing in the community, and the locally available technical knowledge. The aim is to start a process in which external agents act as mere catalysts for an endogenous and sustainable transformation. After a brief introduction to the theoretical and methodological framework, a pilot experience in two municipalities in Colombia is described. This experience has managed to develop a dynamic partnership with a group of local artisans, so that new business models and new products for rural amelioration have been explored. This has started an autonomous process the continuity of which does not depend on external interventions. This approach is not intended to replace, but to complement conventional rural development programs, taking advantage of design as a means to identify and invigorate potential drivers of rural development.
