Abstract Due to the absence of an appropriate business model for the distribution sector, several smart technologies developed, such as time of day (TOD) or time of use (TOU), commercial loss reduction (excluding theft), and demand-side management are not being used for the development of the sector. The new DSO (Distribution System Operator) business model is based on mostly the cost of the following key components: a. CAPEX - Capital Expenditure incurred); b. OPEX (Operational Expenditure), c. Interest and finance charges; e. Return on equity. In this paper we try to show that the new business model can diminish thoses expenses by delegating them for third parties and therefore adding value to the company's main stakeholders. This fact will generate a multi-platform business model (MSP) given the spread of the Internet, as it represents an efficient way to create business value from the interaction between different partners (Valocchi et al., 2010). The future business model for DSOs is expected to enable value creation and capture through management services for flexibility purposes. We analyse the case of Brazil and the R&D programmes lauched by ANEEL (Brazilian Electric System Regulator) to address the challenges regarding the implementation of SmartGrid.
