Abstract The growing demand for the use of information and communication technologies has not only revolutionized our daily lives but it has also contributed to increasing environmental and social concerns. Accelerating factors such as resource depletion and scarcity, environmental damage, use of water and energy, and an unsustainable increase in technological waste in urban areas have become a concern for the government. Sustaining the pace of consumption depends on strategies that enable the recycling of waste and the strengthening of a circular economy through systemic change, research, and innovation, both technological and logistical. Given the importance of waste collection and transportation, in this paper we address the scheduling of technological waste collection logistics corresponding to the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). We show the application of two population metaheuristics, the Cellular Genetic Algorithm (cGA) and the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm used in the generation of optimal routes for the collection of this waste. Real instances from the cities of Caleta Olivia and Comodoro Rivadavia with different collection scenarios are used. The ACO algorithm shows the best routes that minimize the kilometers traveled when compared to those obtained by cGA. Statistical analyses are carried out to confirm these results.
