Abstract Food traditions are essential cultural practices of the territories because they characterize the processes of production and consumption. At present, when it comes to reformulating food systems at the local level, youth participation structures the functioning and cultural identity ascribed to these types of traditions. The main objective of this work is to analyze the limitations and good practices of youth participation in cooperative management to promote agri-food development in Cifuentes, a municipality in the Villa Clara province, located in the center of the island of Cuba. For this, a mixed methodology was used based on a case study, semi-structured interviews and a survey applied in 2021 to rural youth associated with Credit and Services Cooperatives. The research results collected allow us to verify that youth participation is essential for generational change in agricultural cooperatives, because it encourages the transmission of socio-productive skills associated with the use of renewable energy sources, agro-ecology and the circular economy. In this way, it is demonstrated how, from a microsocial perspective, governance and youth management in the cooperative sector are essential pillars for participation in the rural environment.
