Title Using Life Cycle Assessment to Achieve a Circular Economy of Fish Waste
Year 2024
Published Waste And Biomass Valorization, 15, 7
Abstract The study was carried out within the CIRCE2020 project that aimed to facilitate adoption of an integrated environmental management approach based on the circular economy (CE) concept, using instruments derived from material flow analysis (MFA), life cycle costing (LCC) and life cycle analysis (LCA). MFA highlighted waste from fish processing industry for further LCA/LCC analyses. Environmental and cost hotspots are defined for business as usual (BaU) and CE scenarios. Climate change and depletion of abiotic resources (resource use-fossils) are determined as dominant impact categories, accounting for more than 70% of environmental burdens for both scenarios. The environmental footprint is mainly due to fish oil refining process. The CE scenario provides significantly greater financial opportunities for exploitation of fish by-products, but with notably higher initial investment. About 90% of investment costs relate to fish oil refining process. The study proposes an optimized CE scenario that considers a simple and low-cost wet reduction process at the waste donor site and further fish oil refining in a centralized processing centre including a biorefinery. In addition to fish oil, which is further processed to omega-3 fatty acid concentrate, proteins and water are produced. In this way, the CE scenario enables full valorisation of the most valuable fish by-product in a cost-effective manner.
