Abstract |
Barbados has taken a bold initiative to green its economy and made considerable progress in some economic sectors (such as energy). This article investigates the extent to which small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), one of its largest segments of economic activity, have adopted green initiatives, and the factors that have led them to do so. A probit model is estimated using a firm-level database extracted from the Productivity, Technology, Innovation in the Caribbean (PROTEqIN) database, which is managed by Compete Caribbean. SMEs have lagged behind larger firms in adopting green strategies. One of the main constraints was the insufficient availability of technical support and expertise within these enterprises. It is concluded that for the island to be successful in greening its SMEs, access to technical support will have to be improved. |
