Abstract The transition to a more circular economy, where the value of products, materials and resources is maintained in the economy for as long as possible and the generation of waste is minimised, there is both a challenge and an opportunity to transform/develop the economy and generate new and sustainable competitive advantages for Europe. European leather sector recovers the hides and skins (renewable resources resulting from the production of meat for human consumption) and transform them into an appealing, high added value material that finds applications into a number of other value chains, notably in the fashion, furniture and automotive sectors. Tanneries thus prevent a difficult waste disposal problem, generate wealth, employment and contribute to circular economy. Environmental concerns in a nowadays tannery include the prevention and control of emissions to water, air and soil. The environmental effects that have to be taken into account in any tannery comprise not merely the load and concentration of the classic pollutants, but also the use of certain chemicals. The paper presents some innovative tools and technological solutions, developed and experimentally applied in Romanian leather sector, for pollutant impact monitoring and minimization. The intelligent integrated solutions adopted facilitate: (i) pollutant emissions permanent monitoring and improving the quality of the working environment; (ii) decreasing/ replacement of potentially dangerous chemical auxiliaries; (iii) environmental performance monitoring and the environmental management systems (EMS) implementation in the Romanian leather sector, contributing directly to its competitiveness and sustainability.
