Abstract The circular economy (CE) is specifically transforming the linear food supply chains (FSCs), which attracted a lot of interest from practitioners and researchers in order to address the global difficulties facing the FSCs today. However, there has not been much discussion of implementing CE activities in literature, especially in the FSCs. The purpose of this study is to identify the barriers for implementing CE in the FSC. Barriers are identified from past academic literature and are finalized based on the fuzzy-Delphi method. Nine experts provided their opinions to develop the contextual relationship between identified barriers using the DEMATEL with Neutrosophic set theory. As per the findings, top management commitment is crucial for the successful adoption of CE throughout the FSC followed by poor corporate social responsibility. The novelty lies in identification of the barriers for implementing CE in FSC using Neutrosophic theory. This study will assist professionals in developing advantageous ways for adopting the CE to gain sustained competitive advantage in the FSC. Managers and planners can better understand and implement CE strategies in the FSC. The FSC can become more sustainable in a number of ways by using the CE concepts.
