Abstract In the framework of sustainability, low-carbon chemistry is presuming importance and consequently, infusion of circular economy (CE) concept will play a vital role to encompass the green/sustainable chemistry principles more comprehensively to the resource-dependent chemical industry. In the present state of environmental challenges, retrofitting the chemical industry with sustainable product stewardship is significantly important. This communication details the much-needed transformation of the chemical industry in the framework of circular chemistry (CC) by adopting the CE concept in the context of emerging Industry 4.0. The drivers that enable the circularity and the methodological approach/tools that help to practice circularity in the chemical industry domain are detailed. The CC needs to inherit the CE principles by employing both life cycle and systems thinking approaches, which helps to understand and address the sustainability issues of the chemical processes/products. The application of the CC concept needs a case-specific protocols developed by a well-defined methodological approach.
